Identity Terminology

The history of Lansfolk is presumed to have mostly originated from Vault structures despite there being no record of Vaults ever producing reproductively-equipped individuals. The origin of Lansfolk birthed by means of sexual reproduction, possessing a path of development for sexual reproduction, and not conceived by the genesis technology of Vaults remains a mystery.

Motherborn

Throughout much of their modern history, Motherborn Lansfolk are estimated to have comprised a little less than half of the total knowable population.

Despite not having a Vault origin, Motherborn Lansfolk possess some Epigene affinity, and a small percent of them will be conceived with significant Epigene transformation into a seemingly inexhaustible variety of colorful and unusual humanoids. The incidence of this is estimated to be very low at less than one out of twenty Motherborn Lansfolk, creating an erroneous impression that all Motherborn Lansfolk develop human appearances.

Male and female Motherborn humans

Cherry and Birch are not meaningful Motherborn categories. They are broad descriptions of appearance humans can possess which are most departed from those of Ayu and Chance Clone varieties.

Examples of Motherborn Faunus and Zoomorphs

Non-exhaustive examples of Fanciful forms observed in Motherborn Lansfolk:

The Human and Fantastic traits of Motherborn Lansfolk exhibit markedly binary dominant and recessive genetic expression, and it is most common to result in dominant Human expression with only minor Fantastic features, such as ears and tail. In all other cases, the expressions are almost entirely Human or entirely Fantastic.

The remainder of Lanskind's population consists of Clones, conceived through Vault processes and consisting entirely of females not equipped with reproductive capability and not possessing any path of development for sexual reproduction.

Vault Clone

The known clone expressions established in Lans are Ayu, Megatype, Neotype, Blood Con, and Chance varieties. Notably, the prevalence of Blood Con and Chance Clones sharply increased later in Lans history within some time range between the first Carapal settlements and the establishment of Yamato.

Currently, the Human-featured and vastly unvarying Ayu and Chance types exist as only a slim majority between all varieties at around one-quarter of all clones (one-tenth of all Lansfolk).

Ayu Clone

Freshly reconstituted clones exhibit the social abilities and understanding closely proficient to the Lansfolk they subsequently interact with (proficiency in language, in particular). Since technically a fresh clone will have never had any social background whatsoever, this should not be possible without some sort of psychic ability or tele-awareness by the Vault biology. At any rate, it is an involuntary capability of new clones, and described more aptly as Creep marionetting that fades as a clone makes subsequent social activity.

Clones of all types initially adopt the mannerisms and social abilities of the Divers whom they rouse to, then later develop individuality when exposed to broader society. Diving institutions and the Cetacean-like Kai are commonly secure and capable donors of clonekind development, possessing and managing the majority of 'Clone Societies'.

Vault Clones do not experience old age. With no congenital myopia, vision problems at a young age are unheard of. They do not normally develop facial hair nor dyspigmentation such as freckles, and Ayu Clones specifically do not develop pubic hair.

Chance Clone

Some Chance Clones and their differences in possible Faunus features and pubic hair.

Similar to Ayu Clones in most ways except appearance. Chance Clones can be conceived with the Faunus features of a fox, and will possess and naturally develop pubic hair unlike Ayu Clones. In modern history they number slightly less than Ayu Clones.

Vault Clones in the absence of all context typically implies the following:

Blood Con

While they no doubt existed in some form before history, Lanskind did not have coherent documentation of Blood Cons until after the founding of Yamato, now modern day Aurora. Blood Cons are defined by their peculiar, blood-based abilities and being conceived with an odd number of tails numbering one through nine. They are the leading minority of all clone varieties.

Several varieties of Blood Con

Blood Con variants are broad categories that may inform as to the appearance or blood-power aptitudes of an individual, whichever quality is most meaningful. Ilu Kons can feature supernaturally luminescent body features, and command illusory powers. Qubey Kons can develop powers revolving around the effecting of pleasure and sexual attraction. Vertes Kons powers revolve around perfromance augmentation, projecting tendrils of sorts capable of precise manipulation at a distance and otherwise granting themselves graceful and athletic physical alterations.

On rare occasions, Vault Clones can produce various intersex expressions, though it is almost unheard of for Ayu and Chance varities to.

Epigene Affinity

Vault Clones possess a greater affinity for Epigene and Vault technologies than Motherborn. This is especially the case with the Ayu, Chance, and Blood Con types. All Lansfolk with existing Epigene expressions, Clone and Motherborn, complicates this affinity, and so the aforementioned Clone types have long enjoyed being the solitary focus of Epigene studies and applications.

Ayu, Chance, and Blood Con Clones augmented with Epigene and using it to wield biosuits known as Extruders.

Individuals who receive significant Epigene enhancements for application in tactical and special operations are known as Lancers. The ranks of Lancers include every type of Lansfolk, but are primarily occupied by Ayu, Chance, and Blood Con Clones.

Megatype Clone

Megatype and Neotype Clones are varieties consisting entirely of highly pronounced, Fantastic traits, together making up the next largest majority after Vault Clones.

Some Megatype Clones

Megatype Clones are named such for a tendency to develop much greater mass and height than normal. However, there are always exceptions, and some Megatypes exhibit normal if not stunted sizes.

Non-exhaustive examples of the broad categories of traits Megatypes often assume are:

Neotype Clone

Several varieties of Neotype Clones

Neotype Clones are a similarly diverse clone variety as Megatypes, notable for a tendency toward much smaller mass and height than normal. They are slightly less common than Megatypes.

Podfolk

While not all Lansfolk can acquire Epigene enhancements relevant to improving their health, other Vault technologies are used to significant benefit of medical science. Lanskind has found great success in the fabrication and integration of prosthesis, and it is rare but not unknown for an individual to replace numerous and major parts of their natural biology with prosthesis, leaving only parts of the central nervous system deemed too fundamental to remove. Such persons are known as Podfolk.

Examples of different degrees of prosthesis.

Podfolk frequently inhabit vastly different modes of lifestyle that can be broadly categorized by their degree of ambulation and their particular form of socialization with the wider world. Ambulant Podfolk possess a body with the freedom of travel most similar to other Lansfolk. Incorporated Podfolk confine themselves mostly to some unmoving device or span of environment that is prohibitive to regular Lansfolk freedom of travel. Although a seacraft is able to travel across oceans, a Podfolk inhabiting one is considered an Incorporated individual since a significant transfer of their existence is required for them to reasonably socialize as a person would on land.

Several modes of lifestyle exhibited by Podfolk.

Even Ambulant Podfolk may elect to inhabit forms that considerably change their method of interacting with others. When concerning the mode of socialization a Podfolk inhabits, Projector individuals possess display devices instead of their natural face and may use gesture devices in place of body language they no longer possess. A Podfolk is said to be Veiled when in significant lack of outward socializing capabilities, such as possessing no facial features nor prosthetic equivalents. Cephalon Podfolk are named such for maintaining all if not possessing enhanced function of their natural face or a fascimile of one.

Avatars

Lanskind has not had success defining nor synthesizing a satisfactory equivalent of artificial minds through computer technology. The nation of Eibera possessed technologies which came the closest to such an ability before their demise by the rebelling Vault Automatons' ability to forcibly interface with and override computer systems. Lansfolk have not discovered any practical way to mitigate the computational subversion capabilities of the Automatons, and so automated systems lacking some form of non-computerized override are heavily discouraged and otherwise outlawed.

The technology exists in Lans for individuals to replace even their brain while retaining their conscious existence through the use of a rare and mysterious Vault resource known as Cortex Medium. Cortex Medium acts as the physical interface material for what can only be described by Lans science as a metaphysical cognitive processing system. The method of cognitive information processing through Cortex Medium is completely unknown to science, but experimentation of its capabilities has led to the definitive ability to transcribe individual consciousness, achieving what is sufficiently a transhuman existence.

Telling Podfolk apart from Avatars can be difficult, but often unnecessary.

A consequence of Avatar consciousnesses is the practical indiscernability of one when considering an Avatar may be just as capable of possessing a fascimile head as anyone else.
